Our second year purchasing a Honduran coffee form the Catracha Coop. This time around is a single producer by the way of Julio Ventura. This coffee is chock full off sweet caramelized sugar with notes of sweet pastry, marzipan, nutmeg.
Julio Ventura has a 2-acre farm called El Divisadero in the community of
Azacualpa near where he lives with his wife and 6 children. Julio’s wife also
has a small farm and she has been selling her coffee through Catracha Coffee
for the last three years. With the additional income from her farm, Maria
Lourdes helped Julio purchase his own farm so he could start working with
Catracha Coffee too. Julio is dedicated to using organic farm management
practices. In the past year he has used lime to control the pH of the soil,
fertilized with organic compost, and sprayed organic fungicides to control
levels of leaf rust. These actions have improved the health of the farm and the
quality of the coffee production. Julio has lots of experience helping his wife
process her coffee and has taken the same care using his own micro-mill to
depulp, ferment and dry his coffee before delivering it to Catracha Coffee. This is the first year that Julio has processed coffee from El Divisadero for a single-
producer micro-lot and he did not miss a beat. Julio plans to use some of the
extra income from the sale of his coffee to improve his wet mill for next year’s
harvest and help his 18-year-old son with his education at the police academy.
